Cowes Community Hub

Set in the playing fields of Cowes Primary School, the conceptual design for the 106 place child care, kindergarten and maternal and child health centre was developed as part of a government initiative to create children’s hubs on existing primary school sites.

The contemporary design cuts into the slope at the edge of the existing sports oval with a ‘green’ roof embedded into the landscape. Light courts and cut outs are designed to provide day lighting and natural ventilation to the internal spaces. Other ESD initiatives include solar hot water, rainwater recycling and geothermal cooling.

This innovative solution minimises visual impact and retains the playing fields. The Cowes community will benefit from a lively new children’s hub incorporating a toy library, allied health services and adult learning facility.
