Tarrawarra Abbey Opening

We are excited to share with you the opening of our recently completed fire shelter & multi-purpose building for the Cistercian monks of Tarrawarra Abbey.

Designed as a fire shelter, the concept for the building was developed in response to grass fires of 2009 that passed dangerously close to the site. Utilising the inherent protective qualities and thermal mass of in-situ concrete external walls, the design compliments the sites existing timber buildings and provides a robust sanctuary.

The contemporary design cuts into the gentle slope of the site and is topped with a green roof, which adds to the fire resistance and thermal performance of the building shell. Double glazed windows are protected by distinctive copper shrouds and screens while rebated patterns of the Tarrawarra Abbey motif are rebated within the external concrete walls. The interiors respond to the unique rural setting, using natural materials including timber linings and polished concrete floors.
