DESIGN FOR AGING: THE ASSISI CENTRE IN ROSANNA

The Melbourne School of Design (The University of Melbourne) Studio 9, led by Dr. Hing-wah Chau, approached Baldasso Cortese client, the Assisi Centre Inc, regarding the opportunity to have the Assisi Centre Master Plan and future re-development put up as a design project for the post graduate Master of Architecture students.

This studio will focus on design for ageing by using the Assisi Centre in Rosanna as the site for investigation. Through the engagement with aged-care design specialists, site stakeholders and practising architects, students are required to explore the potential of the site, carry out site analysis, prepare group master plans, examine building typologies, undertake context and sustainability studies, which lead to their individual final design presentations.

Baldasso Cortese Director and Care Sector Leader, Neil Christensen, with Assisi Centre CEO, Martin Sammut, and Director of Care, Fiona Kool, presented the recently completed Assisi Centre Master Plan, which involves the expansion of an existing residential aged care facility and the development of retirement living apartments, to 16 masters students, studio leaders, Dr. Hing-wah Chau & David Ritter, and associate professor, Clare Newton.
