Baldasso Cortese was engaged to review development options for the Australia Post Mail Delivery Centre in Oakover Road, Preston.  The feasibility study demonstrated a strong case for integrated retail, commercial and residential redevelopment. 

Preston is a typical Melbourne working class suburb characterised by industrial properties along key routes with surrounding worker housing.  A decline in manufacturing has left many sites vacant and jobs lost.  Many vacated sites are large enough to accommodate significant residential, commercial and civic infrastructure and therefore generate local employment.  They also present an opportunity for improved urban design outcomes.

The project team developed an integrated urban village proposal designed to improve community connections and liveability based on the following key moves:

·         Net positive urban outcome

·         Contribution to public open space

·         Hierarchy of streets

·         Enable modes of public transport

·         Vertical green amenity

·         Encourage Social diversity
